Why do you need netiquette?

Well first of all, what is netiquette?
It's just how it sounds, internet etiquette, or netiquette. Maintiaining good internet etiquette is a key thing characteristic that all cyberspace trekkers should have. For people, looking someone in the eye while hurting their feelings is the very thing that stops people from doing so. However, the internet, texting, email, social media, and other forms of online contact have completely eliminated the need for that. Thus, people feel safer while hurting others, because they feel that they are hidden behind their username and profile picture online. These people who try to hurt others on purpose online are called cyberbullies.
Lack of netiquette could result in cyberbullying, harassment, bullycide, and many other issues. However, there are many easy ways that these people can be prevented from harming others.

  • Block this person's number/profile on social media. This would be the equivalent of ignoring them in the real world. This helps extremely because when cyberbullies don't get a response from you, they will be discouraged from bullying you any further. Plus, you won't have to see all the hurtful messages they send you!
  • If someone is sending you hurtful messages via email, if deleting the messages doesn't work, report those people as spam.
  • Finally, tell a trusted adult, preferrably a parent, teacher or guardian. This person should be able to give you helpful advice on how to deal with cyberbullying. In some cases, this person might even be able to find the bully's real identity and make sure they face the repercussions of what they did to you.
  • And remember, always spread kindness to others, and make sure you treat people online the same, kind way that you would treat them in person.
