Password Protection
Why do you need a secure password?
Your first line of defense when entering the Cyberspace is a password as strong as titanium. Whether it be for your email, or any other important account, in order for your password to protect it from hackers. A lot of people believe that making their password the word “password” is a safe and creative way to avoid being hacked. However, when people try to hack your account, the first password they try is, you guessed it: password. Instead, in order to create a strong password, make sure it meets the following criteria:
- Your password should be over 8 digits: This increases the complexity of your password, and thus, it is harder for hackers to hack into your account.
- Add numbers and/or symbols to your password. The more special characters you have, the stronger a password will be.
- Leave some letters capitalized, and some lowercase: Camel case (i.e. ILikePie or SpongeBobIsDaBest) would be preferred, along with a couple of numbers and/or symbols.
- Use more than one word, and don’t make your password too generic. Passwords such as “taco” or “Ice-Cream” are other go-to passwords for hackers. Another piece of advice would be to make your password something that most people wouldn’t guess. For example, if you like the Harry Potter Book Series, don’t make your password “Harry Potter.” Instead, make it something that is harder to guess.
- If your password is a number combination, don’t make it a pattern. Passwords like “12345” or “2468” are strongly discouraged as these would make it easier for people to hack your account. However, a password like “28742” would be harder to guess.
- Make your password easy to remember! If you make your password something such as “9e23kk2113fFf776,” chances are, you are going to forget it. Make sure your password makes sense for you, and is something you can remember easily.
- DO NOT make it the same as your username! This is another go-to option for hackers! While your password might be easy to remember, it is too easy for your account to be hacked.
